“Reason this person is a Gold Ribbon Hero: Sereen was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor Stage III at the tiny age of 2. She had a 3lb tumor engulfing her right kidney.
After surgically removing the tumor and the right kidney, Sereen went through 5 days of radiation treatment and 6 months of chemotherapy.
According to her oncology team at the time, Sereen would be in remission and on her way back to a healthy life despite only having one remaining kidney.
At the one year mark of finding out she has cancer, her labs continue to come out abnormal, specifically her urine tests.
After consulting various pediatric nephrologists, consultations with oncology team, collaboration with researchers in the medical field, Sereen was hospitalized yet again.
During this 2nd round, Sereen’s remaining kidney was determined unhealthy.
Sereen continues to be monitored by both her pediatric oncology and nephrology team, with frequent lab work.
We don’t know what the future holds and all we could do is truly live in the present.
This is why Sereen is a Gold Ribbon Hero. She always reminds us the value of our lives, being in the present, and her endless courage.” – Asma A
