CCAM – September 2024

September is childhood cancer awareness month, and there are so many ways to get involved! Whether you buy an awareness shirt, join our advocacy movement, share crucial statistics on social, or donate directly, you’re helping kids with cancer across the United States!

What About Kids Advocacy Update

Childhood cancer afflicts every demographic across the United States and around the world. With advancements in research, survival rates have increased, but childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children. The majority of those children who survive often face a lifetime of health complications from the diagnosis and toxic cancer treatments.

In the U.S., childhood cancer receives far less attention and funding compared to adult cancer. In 2017, only two states funded childhood cancer research. In response to this disparity, the American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO) created our What About Kids State Research Initiative. In 2018, Kentucky became ACCO’s first state to sign childhood cancer legislation into law, with an associated $5 million appropriation for the biennium.

Since 2018, ACCO has worked to secure more than $100 million in state funding for childhood cancer research, with seven states (PA, NJ, MD, NE, VA, NY, KY) are investing in the fight against this disease. States play a critical role in overcoming the national disparity between adult and childhood cancer research and treatment, and these states are rising to that challenge.

Since none of these state research funds go to ACCO, we are dependent upon the donations of individuals to continue this transformative work which brings hope for new treatments and cures for children with cancer.

Your support is crucial to expanding this initiative nationwide and ensuring every state contributes to the fight against childhood cancer. Help us bring hope, new treatments, and ultimately cures for children battling this devastating disease. Donate now to support ACCO’s mission and make a difference in the lives of countless children.

Donate to ACCO

Donations like yours keep ACCO’s mission afloat. Donations like yours are how we bring free resources to thousands of families every year and secure research funding for better treatments. Donations like yours bridge the gap between what has been achieved and what still needs to be done. Our goal is to secure state-based childhood cancer research funding in 25 states by 2030, and every single donation brings us closer.

It’s Never Too Late to GO GOLD®!

A significant portion of ACCO’s funding comes from small fundraisers. Your bake sale or pajama party could make a real difference in the lives of children! If you’ve never run a fundraiser before, don’t worry. ACCO is happy to provide guidance, print materials, and swag like stickers and bracelets. Plus, we’ll take care of all the administrative paperwork.
